Resumo | The Scintillation Prediction Observations Research Task (SPORT) is a 6U CubeSat mission designed to study the conditions under which ionospheric variability develops at low latitudes. It was deployed into a low Earth orbit from the International Space Station on December 29, 2022. One of the science payloads is the Miniaturized Science Magnetometer (MSM) provided by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The MSM, mounted on a 15 cm boom, measures the Earth's magnetic field with ± 65,000 nT dynamic range. We discuss the on-orbit calibration process as well as the data cleanup procedures applied to MSM to mitigate spacecraft magnetic interference signals and digital artifacts in the instrument telemetry. When attitude solutions are available from the star camera, we perform an on-orbit calibration of MSM against a model of the Earths internal magnetic field, allowing us to separate the internal and external fields. When attitude solutions are not available, we apply specialized techniques to remove the large background field to extract magnetic field perturbations, and we infer the attitude using the Earths magnetic field and other ancillary inputs. Our calibration and data processing procedures have produced reasonably good results even in the absence of precise attitude knowledge. During the 30 May 2023 plasma depletion events observed simultaneously by the Ion Velocity Meter (IVM) and the Space Weather Probe (SPW) Langmuir probe, the MSM observed ~5-10 nT magnetic field perturbations associated with plasma depletions. |
